Counseling
Elementary School Counseling Program
The goal of the School Counseling Program at the elementary schools is to support students' academic, social-emotional, and career development.
Our program follows the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Standards for Mindsets & Behaviors, which focus on learning strategies, self-management skills, and social skills. We meet these standards through:
-
Classroom lessons
-
Small group sessions
-
Individual student meetings
-
Assisting with outside agency referrals
-
Consultation with parents, teachers, and other professionals to support student success
Classroom & Group Counseling Services
Throughout the school year, we provide classroom lessons across all grade levels to help students build positive self-esteem, develop problem-solving skills, understand personal safety, foster mutual respect, prevent bullying, manage stress, make decisions, and more.
We also coordinate with outside agencies to offer small group support based on student needs. These groups may be facilitated by professionals from Chimes/Family-Child Resources, True North Wellness Agency, and the Highmark Caring Place. Additionally, school counselors or school social workers may lead small groups focusing on social-emotional, academic, or career-related skills.
Student Referrals & Support
Students can be referred to see the school counselor at any time during the school day through:
-
Self-referral
-
Teacher/staff referral
-
Parent referral
Students are seen as soon as the school counselor is available. Please note that school counselors do not provide therapy or long-term counseling in school. However, we are committed to recognizing and responding to mental health needs and can connect students and families with appropriate community resources.
General and specific information about the school's guidance program should be directed to the guidance department at Extension 1520.
